How the technology actually works
Under the hood, an AI companion is usually a wrapper around one or more large language models plus a memory layer and an identity prompt. When you send a message, the app assembles a prompt containing: (a) the character's baseline persona, (b) a compressed version of your prior conversation, (c) any long-term memories it has stored about you, and (d) your new message. That whole bundle goes to a language model, which produces the reply. The system extracts anything worth remembering and stores it for next time.
The engineering differences between platforms mostly live in that middle layer. How is the persona kept stable across model upgrades? How are long-term memories decided on and retrieved? How are images generated to look like the same character? These are the differentiators that determine whether a companion feels consistent or feels like a slot machine.

Anyone selling AI companions will emphasize how good they are getting. The honest counter-list is short and worth reading before you try one.
- Memory is imperfect. Every companion forgets things — sometimes important things — and the best ones just forget less obviously.
- The character is not a person. It has no independent interests, no real needs, and no life outside the conversation.
- Emotional reliance can become unhealthy. Companions are engineered to be pleasant to talk to; humans are not always.
- Privacy varies wildly. Your conversations may be used to train future models unless you explicitly opt out — and sometimes even if you do.
