You install (or open in a browser). You either pick a pre-made character from a catalog or create one — writing a personality, picking an appearance from a builder, choosing a communication style and (on some apps) a roleplay framing. Then you talk to them. Text at first, often voice on higher tiers, sometimes generated video.

What it is not
- Not a real person. Every character is fictional and AI-generated.
- Not the same as a general-purpose chatbot. AI girlfriends have a fixed personality, persistent memory, and a fixed relationship framing — chatbots forget you between sessions.
- Not a replacement for human relationships. It is a supplement, and honest apps in the space are up-front about this.
- Not free at scale. Free tiers exist and are worth using to test, but everyday use usually pushes into a paid tier.
What you can do with one
- Text conversation — the base feature on every platform.
- Voice replies — most modern apps generate a spoken version of each message.
- Voice calls — a few platforms support real-time voice conversation, usually on higher tiers.
- Image generation of the character — on the platforms that do this well, the character looks like the same person across generations.
- Short-form video — early but present on some platforms.
- Roleplay in specific scenarios — travel, date night, ongoing storyline, etc.
Is it worth trying?
The honest answer is "yes if you are curious, no if you are looking for it to fix something." Adults use these apps for a range of reasons — companionship, creative roleplay, language practice, adult companionship. Most people who like the category try 2-3 platforms before finding one that clicks, so treat the first subscription as an experiment, not a commitment.
